Classroom of the Elite : Merge Puzzle Special Exam offers a combination of two main genres: "merge" puzzles and interactive visual novels. You'll be asked to combine various items on a puzzle board, such as books, notes, or cards, to create new items needed to complete missions and unlock new story elements. This mechanism is quite similar to popular games like Merge Mansion, but with the unique feel and character of the Classroom of the Elite world.
As you progress, you'll complete missions that unlock new characters and other story elements. There's also a light gacha system to unlock additional characters, each with special abilities that can speed up the merge process or provide advantages in puzzles.
Story
The game's story takes place at Koudo Ikusei High School, an elite school that serves as the main focus of the original anime. You'll play a new student who interacts directly with main characters like Ayanokouji, Horikita, and Karuizawa. The story is presented in a visual novel format, complete with illustrated cutscenes and dialogue choices that allow you to influence the relationships between the characters.
The storyline focuses on a "special exam" that tests your intelligence, social strategy, and analytical skills, as well as those of the other characters. This original story is a major plus for fans of the anime, as it features interactions not seen in the main series.
Level Design
The game's level design evolves gradually. Early levels are kept simple enough to be easily understood by new players, but as the story progresses, the challenge increases. The items that need to be combined become more complex, the mission objectives become higher, and you have to start thinking strategically about how to organize your moves and utilize limited board space.
Some levels even feature additional elements such as time limits, locked chests, or puzzle boards that are not fully unlocked. All levels are structured around story chapters, providing a sense of continuity and motivation to complete missions to unlock the next narrative thread.
Graphics & UI
Visually, the game features high-quality 2D anime-style illustrations, closely resembling the character designs from the official series. Although animations are somewhat limited, the transitions during merges are smooth and satisfying. The user interface is designed to be intuitive and clean, allowing you to focus on the puzzles and story without being distracted by unnecessary elements.
