Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale is a roguelike deck-building game developed by Slothwerks. It is a follow-up to Meteorfall: Journey, but offers much deeper and more complex gameplay.
Story
The game is set in the same Meteorfall universe, where chaos has erupted due to a monster invasion. You take control of one of several unique heroes, guided by Krumit, an eccentric wizard who also serves as the narrator and commentator throughout your adventure. While the story itself isn’t particularly deep, it’s full of humor and entertaining dialogue.
Gameplay
Krumit's Tale blends strategic deck-building with a grid-based dungeon system. You choose a hero and explore 3x3 grid-shaped dungeons, where each tile can contain enemies, items, or abilities.
The core gameplay elements include a grid system where you must purchase, activate, or attack tiles on the board; a deck-building mechanic where each hero has customizable cards tailored to specific strategies; gold management that forces you to think carefully about purchasing or activating items; and roguelike progression, featuring permanent death but with the opportunity to unlock new cards or content in each retry.
Each hero offers a completely different playstyle. For example, Bruno is a tough melee fighter (tank), Greybeard is a wizard, Muldorf is a necromancer, Mischief is a rogue with tricky abilities, and Rose is an archer or ranger. This variety makes each playthrough feel fresh and challenging.
Level Design
The level design is highly varied despite using a 3x3 grid format. Enemies, traps, and rewards are randomized each time you enter a new dungeon, providing high replayability. Every few levels, you'll face a boss battle that demands strategic planning and a strong understanding of your deck. Additionally, the levels are not entirely linear, offering different path choices depending on your condition and strategy.
Graphics and Visual Design
Visually, Krumit's Tale adopts a cartoon style resembling hand-drawn comics, with quirky and personality-filled character animations. Each character design is unique, colorful, and presents a distinctive artistic flair not often found in the roguelike genre. The cards are clearly illustrated and easy to read.
While the user interface (UI) might feel a bit dense at first, after a few sessions, navigation and controls become more intuitive and comfortable.
Difficulty
The game’s difficulty is quite high, even for players experienced in strategy or roguelike games. The combination of deck-building elements, RNG (luck), and grid-based strategy makes every decision meaningful. A single small mistake can have major consequences, especially when facing powerful enemies or boss battles.
That said, the meta-progression system offers some assistance and incentive with each new run, but still requires a deep understanding of card synergy and timing to succeed.
