The main theme of Ark Nova centers around building and managing a modern zoo with a focus on species conservation and public education. We take on the role of zoo managers competing to attract visitors, run conservation projects, and establish partnerships with universities, sponsors, and other zoos worldwide. Although there is no linear narrative story, the educational atmosphere and ecological values are strongly felt and tightly integrated with the game mechanics.
**Gameplay**
Ark Nova employs a card-based action system, where we choose one of five available main actions. These five actions include drawing cards into our hand (Cards), building enclosures or other structures (Build), playing animal cards into the zoo (Animals), performing conservation efforts and international partnerships (Association), and playing sponsor cards to gain immediate or long-term effects (Sponsors).
Each action has a power level from one to five depending on its position in the action queue, and once used, the action shifts to the far left position, refreshing the order. This mechanic creates tactical dynamics that require careful planning of our action sequence.
Additionally, there are two parallel scoring tracks — appeal and conservation — that move in opposite directions. The game ends when our two scoring tokens meet on the score track, creating a unique and tension-filled endgame system.
The game features a wide variety of cards, with over 200 unique cards ensuring a high level of replayability and giving each game a different feel. There are also light asymmetry elements that arise from the selection of our boards and different starting cards for each player.
